The U.S. Hygienic Laboratory was established in 1887 under the U.S. Marine Hospital Service. It became a part of the U.S. Public Health Service in 1912. James Shannon was on the faculty of the New York University College of Medicine from 1929-46. In 1946 he joined the National Institutes of Health, where he was the director from 1955-68.
